What Jewellery Tumbler Polishers Are

Jewellery tumbler polishers are easily found online and in jewellery craft stores. Their use, however, is harder to decipher. It’s easy for new hobbyists to find themselves lost in the seeming jargon of rock tumblers, vibrating tumblers, or even just baroque rock polishing.

Tumblers are essentially used to round and polish rocks. These tumblers are designed to simulate the natural process of rock weathering, and results in shaping and polishing the rocks at a much faster rate. They come in three forms: regular jewellery tumblers, magnetic polishers, and jewellery cleaners or polishers.

Jewellery tumblers are composed of a rotating barrel partially-filled with water, abrasive grit or steel shapes and cleaners. As the barrel rotates, the abrasive grit or shapes repeatedly come in contact with the stone that is being polished. This massivefriction shapes and polishes the stone into something that can easily be used for jewellery.

Magnetic polishers are much less mechanical. There’s a stationary partially filled barrel with water mixed with stainless steel pins. A rotary magnetic field causes the pins to move across the barrel, causing the same massive friction that is simulated in the jewellery tumblers.

Ultrasonic cleaners completely rid the polishing and cleaning process of mechanical activities. Instead, you will find a fixed chamber of water and cleaner sans grit. Ultrasonic waves generate enough bubbles to simulate the same pressure on the rocks that cause it to be polished and cleaned.

Take note when buying tumblers that their weight specification, for instance, 2.0lbs, does not refer to the weight of the tumbler per se. Instead, this specification refers to the weight of rocks the tumbler can process at a given time.
